The Ajiwara River flowing through Hamasaka town is very important in the history, culture, and living in Hamasaka, though it is a small river. The splendid stone walls of the old houses and temples are aligned along the riverside Ajiwara alley, where river boat mooring spots, small shrines to water deities, wells, and washing places remain. The river water is used for fire prevention and snow melting, though it is not for drinking any more. Hot spring water is distributed to respective houses. The path leading from the Ajiwara alley, Kannon Mountain to the pine woods along the seashore are enjoyed by many people because it is a peaceful walking path. It may be interesting to compare the old and new fishing ports.
